Episode 48: How Neck Pain Is Directly Correlated To Bad Posture And Core Activation

In this episode Jenni and Jake go over the importance of posture and activating your core when it comes to neck pain, and what you need to do to start alleviating the pain!

(3:25) How core activation relates to neck pain, and how neck pain is related to posture.

(4:28) the #1 cause of non traumatic neck pain is posture!

(5:00) What is non traumatic neck pain?

(5:45) Why is posture the number one cause of neck pain?

(6:00) The natural tendency when you sit is your chest drops, its gravity, simple as that!

(7:00) Maintain your spine angle to maintain your posture!

(9:00) When your shoulders are down and your head is forward or up looking at things, you are “jack knifing” your neck and increasing the angle at your cervical spine and thoracic spine which correlates to “pinchyitis”!

(9:48) What is “pinchyitis” and what does it cause?

(10:45) How does your posture even affect your thumb?

(12:00) If you focus on your chest position the neck typically falls in place.

(12:10) how to fix your neck? Get your chest up, strengthen your core!

(13:17) Before you can strengthen your core you have to activate your core..

(14:00) That 6 pack you might have is not your core! Your core is made up of several muscles.

(15:00) The pelvic floor muscles have to do with A LOT of your body’s muscles.

(16:00) The one thing that gives us the best chance at activating the core muscles is the “paparazzi pose” You stand a little bit taller and pull the belly button in!

(18:45) Muscles do not push! They can only pull!

(19:10) Once you feel the belly button pulled in, try more! Imagine you’re about to get sucker punched right in your gut.

20:09) The most common way to fix neck pain is fixing posture. The best way to fix posture, get in your paparazzi pose.

(21:00) Pull your belly button into the spine and raise your chest up!

(21:37) Come into berman PT to get help with muscle activation! In person and virtual sessions available.

(22:30) Make sure to check out last week’s episode if you missed it.

Dr. Jake Berman

After graduating from the University of Florida, Dr. Jake Berman, PT, DPT sought out mentorship first from Bob Seton in Destin, FL and then from Aaron Robles in Jacksonville, FL. Both of these mentors have 20+ years of experience helping people keep active and mobile so they can enjoy high quality active lifestyles. What Jake found was that back pain was by far the most debilitating pain and the highest factor leading to decreased physical activity later in life. These experiences are what inspired Jake to specialize in helping people aged 50+ keep active, mobile and pain free despite the aging process. There is nothing more rewarding than being able to alleviate somebody’s back pain so that they can get back to living their best life- especially in Naples! Over the years of helping 100’s of people aged 65-75 become stronger and pain free, one thing for sure has become apparent: “he who rests rots”. Jake is a firm believer that we become stiff then old, not old then stiff. Seriously, think about it...
